	Mittelamerika Visscher, Nicolaus, ab 1664 kol. 52,5 x 39,5 cm Copper Plate, Hand Colored This excellent map of the Caribbean shows the region from Chesapeake to the Gulf of Mexico, Central America and northern South America, to the equator. Two decorative cartouches with cherubs and sea creatures decorate the opposite corners of the map. On the bottom left is a beautiful mileage scale with a maritime character. The top right has detailed cartouche of thg title. Eight ships travel the seas and three native canoes are pictured on the coast of North America. Several interesting cartographic myths are present on the map including two large non-existing lakes in the western region of Georgia. The archetypal cartographic myth of El Dorado, lies at the Lacus Parime in Guyana. The card is a beautiful resource for political history. Many of the colored areas shown as smaller political entities have become part of the larger states.
