	Ozeanien Südpazifik / Australien / Neuseel. Bénard, Robert, 1774 65,3 x 35,4 cm Karte des Süd-Pazifik aus der franz. Ausgabe von Hawkesworth´s wichtigem Werk " An Account of the Voyages .....for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere", 1773 erschienen. Gezeigt werden auf der Karte die Reiserouten von Byron, Wallis und Carteret ebenso wie die erst Reise von Cook. Copper Plate, Hand Colored This is map is entitled Ocean of the South that princably show the voyages of reknown European explorers. The title in the center lists the names of the ships “Le Dauphin” The Dolphin and “L’Endeavour” The Endeavour and their respective commanders. Captain Cook’s famous circumnavigation of New Zealand is clearly shown. In addition the recorded expeditions of John Byron, Samuel Wallis, Philip Carteret, James Cook from 1765 to 1771 are shown. The title and the discovery data and a side note, are engraved in the ocean. The eastern Australian coast is well detailed with the exception of Tasmania which is shown as being connected to the mainland. Reference Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, Early World Press, 2004 Die Seekarte des französischen Kupferstechers Robert Bénard (1754-1785) zeigt den Pazifischen Ozean zwischen der Westküste Süd- und Mittelamerikas und den Ostindischen Inseln. Die Landflächen sind farbig hervorgehoben. Australien wird als Neu-Holland bezeichnet und ist mit Tasmanien verbunden. Die fehlerhafte Verbindung mit Neu Guinea ist, im Gegensatz zu früheren Karten, nicht mehr eingezeichnet. Die Küsten Australiens und Neuseelands sind sehr detailliert beschrieben. Die eingetragenen Seewege zeigen die Entdeckungsreisen von John Byron, Samuel Wallis, Philipp Carteret und James Cook aus den Jahren 1765 bis 1771 an. Der Titel, sowie die Entdeckungsdaten und eine Randnotiz sind in den Ozeans graviert. Bénard wurde bekannt durch die Anfertigung der Druckplatten für die französische Ausgabe von „Cooks Fahrten um die Welt“.

ArtikelNr.: 3109 Ozeanien / Australien Bowen, Emanuel, 1744 47,6 x 37,4 cm A Complete Map of the Southern Continent. As Surveyed by Capt. Abel Tasman & completed for East India Company in Amsterdam Holland. Copper Plate, Hand Colored This is a fantastic example of an eighteenth century map of Australia. Western Australia is shown in good detail for the time, although further to the east is evidence of the lack of knowledge of this region at the time of publication. The top right text states that as it had been produced from a Dutch copper plate. As a result the original Dutch names been kept. It also states that it is based on actual discoveries and this is the reason for large portion of white space on the map. Comment is made to the discovery of Australia to dispel criticism that had been made at the time regarding its existence. The bottom right text provides a rich comparative explanation of the expectations of the flora and fauna that had been found by the British in similar latitudes around the world. Examples of gold and ivory found in Africa and silver found in modern day Peru are given to increase interest in this map and the area. At the bottom next to the title cartouche is a early description of ‘Van Dieman’s land’ which was the original name used by most Europeans for modern day Tasmania. The map also show some of the first European discoveries of New Zealand. Captain Abel Tasman was the first European to discover New Zealand in 1642. This is before Captain James Cook would circumnavigate the Islands and provide a reasonably accurate description of the coastline in 1769-1770. Of particular note is Mordenaer Bay (Murders Bay) the name given to the bay after a tragic event. Four of Tasman's crew were killed, when a small boat that was passing between the two larger vessels of the expedition was rammed by the indigenous Maori. The Dutch responded by killing several of the Maori.

Given the empasis of this map on the voyages of exploration, the ship could be the Captin Cook's ship The Endeavor. The cartouche identifies the origin and the manufacturer as Antonio Zatta. Further text in Italian shows the discovery of the area by James Cook. This map is from the "Atlante Novissimo", the masterpiece of Antonio Zattas (1750-1840). This atlas was printed in 1776-1785 in Venice and includes some 240 maps in 4 volumes. Antonio Zatta was from 1750 until his death in 1804 a publisher and bookseller based in Venice. Zatta war seit 1797 als „Stampatore municipale“ mit Senatsprivilegien der „Serenissima“ ausgestattet. Als herausragend dürfte das 4-bändige Werk „Atlante Novissimo“ bezeichnet werden. Hier finden sich unter anderem die frühesten Verarbeitungen der Cookschen Entdeckungsreisen. 	New Zealand Bénard, Robert, 1774 later colour, 38 x 48 cm very good condition Copper Plate, Hand Colored This maps is from the French edition of Hawkesworth's important work, "An Account of the Voyages for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere". Orignialy written by British explorer captin James Cook. This was originally published in 1773. The first European discovery of New Zealand was by Dutchman Abel Tasman in 1642. However it was circumnavigated by Captain Cook in 1769 and 1770. This proved that the islands were not part of a great southern continent. On note in this map the portrayal of the Banks Peninsula as an Island and Stewart Island as connected to the South Island. Rhumb lines cross the map from two points, and a simple ‘fleur-de-lis’ indicates north on the right hand side. Bénard was known for the manufacture of printing plates for the French edition of Cook's journeys around the world. Der Niederländer Abel Tasman entdeckte 1642 Neuseeland, jedoch wurde erst durch die Umsegelung Neuseelands durch James Cook in den Jahren 1769 und 1770 herausgefunden, daß die Insel nicht Teil des großen südlichen Kontinents ist.
