Copper Plate, Hand Colored An important map of the South Pacific which shows the Eastern coast of Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and the Society Islands. The routes of European explorers Cook, Mouat, Wallis, Caterets and Byron are shown. The bottom right corner is a decorative cartouche in the form of a plant rich stretch of coastline with sailing ship a indigenous vessel and a contemporary European exploration vessel. Given the empasis of this map on the voyages of exploration, the ship could be the Captin Cook's ship The Endeavor. The cartouche identifies the origin and the manufacturer as Antonio Zatta. Further text in Italian shows the discovery of the area by James Cook. This map is from the "Atlante Novissimo", the masterpiece of Antonio Zattas (1750-1840). This atlas was printed in 1776-1785 in Venice and includes some 240 maps in 4 volumes. Antonio Zatta was from 1750 until his death in 1804 a publisher and bookseller based in Venice. Die Routen Cooks, Mouats', Wallis', Caterets und Byrons sind eingezeichnet. Rechts ein italienischer Text über Cooks Entdeckungen in diesem Gebiet. Bemerkenswert ist die Kartusche am linken unteren Rand. Eine Strandszene mit exotischer Fauna und Muscheln im Vordergrund. Pflanzen umrahmen den Kartentitel. Das Schiff im Hintergrund, vermutlich die Endeavour Cooks, ist befreit von der tektonischen Fassung barocker Karten und weist ins „offene Meer“ des Kartengrundes.Antonio Zattas genaue Lebensdaten sind unbekannt. Tätig ab etwa 1750, ist er einer der größten Verleger für illustrierte Bücher Italiens des 18. Jahrhunderts mit Sitz in Venedig. Zatta war seit 1797 als „Stampatore municipale“ mit Senatsprivilegien der „Serenissima“ ausgestattet. Als herausragend dürfte das 4-bändige Werk „Atlante Novissimo“ bezeichnet werden. Hier finden sich unter anderem die frühesten Verarbeitungen der Cookschen Entdeckungsreisen. Die bekannt gewordenen Küstenkonturen und die Reiserouten Cooks und seiner Entdecker-Zeitgenossen sind genau festgehalten.Literatur: Kretschmer,1984
